FAQs
- What is the eligibility criteria?
-
To apply, you must:
- Be a benefits-eligible staff member
- Have at least one year of continuous service at Rice (by July 1)
- Be in good standing with Human Resources
- Have supervisor approval
- Please note that your supervisor will be emailed and asked if you are allowed to participate. Without their approval, we are not allowed to let you join Staff Council.
- What is the timeline for applications?
-
- April 1-30: Applications are open
- May: Review and selection
- Early June: Notification of application status
- July 1: New members join Staff Council
- What is the selection process?
-
The Executive Committee reviews applications with the goal of:
- Ensuring unit representation (academic, non-academic, facilities, etc.)
- Creating a council representative of the staff population at Rice University
- Selecting new members by May and notifying new members by early June
- Rotating no more than one-third of Council members annually
- What if I'm not selected?
-
There could be multiple reasons why you are not selected, including but not limited to:
- Over-representation of a specific unit (our bylaws only allow us to have two people per division outside of the Executive Team)
- Not in good standing with HR
- Lack of supervisor approval
- Too much interest, limited spots available
If you are not selected, we will let you know by email in early June.
- What is the time commitment?
-
Staff Council members are expected to participate in both full member meetings and the committees they are assigned to. We are currently in the process of further defining what participation looks like through a committee, but this is what a usual month looks like (with summer being a little slower):
- One formal meeting for all voting SC members (1.5 hours; hybrid options; used for business)
- One informal meeting for all voting SC members (1 hour; optional; used for community building)
- One committee meeting (1 hour; used for work on your subcommittee)
- Depending on your level of involvement and participation, this could increase.
- Other:
- There are times during the year where there might be other events, such as a Holiday Lunch, the Ice Cream Social, etc. where participation and volunteerism is requested.
